Our trip to Central Asia, was the result of many nights of on-line research by Scott, our coordinator based in Shanghai. Scott's track record as a traveler includes trips such as horse-riding in Tibet, driving across Mongolia and heading to other exotic destinations such as Laos and Cambodia.

But in recent years, his passion has been to explore Central Asia, and he has even spoken of moving there. Such talk along with his range of travel experiences, was hard to resist when I stayed with him in Shanghai, and we enthusiastically discussed a range of student travel possibilities.   Later Scott became an official Go Beyond Coordinator specializing in the Central Asian area.

Through Scott we made a number of contacts in Central Asia, and found that volunteering is alive and well in the area, thanks to the efforts of many passionate social entrepreneurs.    The ones we met on our trip welcomed us as visitors to their countries and showed a keen interest in cooperating with us.

People of Central Asia

We hope that this contact will not only lead to meaningful volunteering opportunities abroad for young people from both their area and ours, but also to opportunities for cultural exchanges.   Indeed travelling to Central Asia, or the "Stans" as the area is called is an unforgettable experience.
